The Intermodal Award event is a wonderful opportunity to learn about existing intermodal transport solutions. To stimulate innovative, concrete solutions for the intermodal industry, EIA will attribute, “Intermodal Awards” to those organizations, who contributed the ‘best‘ solution to promote Intermodal transport in a specific area. The playing field is global and concerns the whole intermodal industry.

The EIA Intermodal Award 2010 ceremony will take place under the framework of the Intermodal Europe, supporter of this initiative on 1 December 2010 in Amsterdam.
EIA is proud to present the first ‘Intermodal Yearbook 2010; Strategies, Statistics, Terminals and Players’. According to our knowledge, this publication offers a unique combination of networks, facts and figures stemming from various transport modes.

ALL YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT PORT HINTERLAND

A high quality atlas format has been chosen to show capacities, volumes and other statistics connecting port hinterland, terminal-terminal and production to consumer areas in relation to networks, corridors, modes and market players.

WHAT’S INSIDE?

This Yearbook is a combined statistical overview, promotional tool, lobbying instrument and directory listing all in one. It is important that we all have this standard reference work for our contacts with (potential) industrial clients, research partners, to search and serve new markets, while improving intermodal (infrastructure/logistics) policies.

Since this is the first edition, and while it is our intention to update it annually, EIA makes no claim that this Yearbook is ‘complete’. As mentioned in the last article ‘To be continued?’ we invite anyone not mentioned in this Yearbook to contact EIA, providing good reasons why their network, statistics and overviews should, in future, be included.

OUR PARTNERS & SPONSORS

Apart of the production of new statistics by lead partners NEA and ISL, various sources have been consulted, such as Eurostat, various DGs within the EC, national ministries, port databases, ‘Brussels’ expert organisations, promotion centres, research bodies, EU project results, press, universities, personal opinions of individuals and, of course, members of EIA. The administrative price has been kept deliberately low; it should be accessible for various authority and management levels, also educational institutes as supplier of our future decision makers.

Many thanks to our sponsors: Ambrogio; Port of Antwerp; Bertschi AG; Polzug Intermodal; Procter & Gamble; TFG Transfracht.

EIA held its 17th General Assembly in Hamburg on 26 March 2010. It was followed by the ‘Intermodal Port Hinterland’ Round Table at the headquarters of the Hamburg Port Authority.

PRESS RELEASE

EIA held its 17th General Assembly in Hamburg on 26 March 2010. It was followed by the ‘Intermodal Port Hinterland’ Round Table at the headquarters of the Hamburg Port Authority. Both events gathered a select group of key decision-makers from intermodal transport and logistics circles.

A number of decisions were taken at the GA, including the election of a new President, Ms. Hanja MAIJ WEGGEN, former Transport Minister in the Netherlands and former EU Member of the EU Parliament, currently playing an active part in the political ‘Stoiber Group’, the aim of which is to reduce bureaucracy in Europe. She replaces private intermodal operator Livio AMBROGIO, who showed his willingness to continue to play an active part in the Association as its Vice-President.

The Assembly accepted several new members: GEODIS; Lithuanian Railways; Port of Hamburg Marketing; Sofia Yana Intermodal Terminal. In joining the association, these new members have shown their commitment to the intermodal cause and the interest that Baltic, Bulgarian and French players have in being connected with the intermodal movement in Brussels. Walter SCHULZE FREYBERG from Polzug Intermodal was newly elected to the Steering Committee.

The EIA secretariat presented its 2009 results, which included lobbying achievements in relation to EU policy initiatives such as e-freight, TEN-T and Marco Polo, participation in EU projects such as EIRAC, TELLIBOX, EWITA and SMART-CM, the latter being an EU industrial research venture aimed at developing a technology-agnostic single window to streamline and facilitate port-customs-terminal hinterland container data flows in a Green Lane concept.

EIA in-house initiatives were also presented, examples being the new EU ‘Compendium for Freight & Logistics Best Practices’. This glossy single window web application has been established at the request of the EU Commission and shows dozens of successful freight market cases, explaining their sustainable, innovative and profitable products and services.

Sebastian JÜRGENS, Board member of HHLA, was guest of honour at a dedicated EIA dinner in the Hafenclub on March 25, on the eve of the ‘Port Hinterland’ Round Table. On March 26, DVZ journalist Michael HOLLMANN moderated lively discussions with DB Intermodal Services, DB Schenker Rail Deutschland, the Ports of Gothenburg, Hamburg, Klaipeda and TFG Transfracht, among others. The results of the session will be published in the first EU‘INTERMODAL YEARBOOK’ co-produced by EIA, NEA and ISL. The yearbook in Atlas format will address subjects such as port hinterland policies, freight flow statistics, modal split, inland terminals and networks, players, etc. For more information, go to www.eia-ngo.com

Click in the following links to download the PDF version of the Press Release and the summary of the Round Table presentations

The results of the Round Table will be combined with new port-hinterland statistics produced by EIA/NEA/ISL and received from various members of EIA. To be published in the first Intermodal Yearbook in Atlas format (Spring 2010). Send your network or statistics to peter.wolters@eia-ngo.com

The Handbook Intermodal Transport in Europe is now available for only 49€!

Why the first handbook on European intermodal freight transport?

Much has been said and reported about intermodal transport in Europe, but you will probably not find a comprehensive summary explaining “Intermodalism from A to Z” in a compact form, combined with concrete business fact sheets and written in English.

This first handbook, including a foreword by Jacques Barrot, Vice President of the European Commission responsible for Transport, fills this gap and can be ordered now.

It gives major insights into all aspects of Intermodal transport, from production and technology to quality, markets and policy issues. This new reference point for the intermodal industry includes contributions from China Turkey and the USA.

Apart from the main explanatory text, about 50 additional fact sheets of successful intermodal players will give an insight regarding their strategy, experiences, services and products.

Sponsors and contributors of fact sheets: AAE, Ambrogio, Amrie, Polzug Intermodal GmbH, Port of Rotterdam, Rail Cargo Austria, ÖBB, Port of Taranto, OOCL and Via Donau and many others stemming from all transport modes, like HUPAC, KALMAR, STINNES, manufacturing industries (NIKE, Procter & Gamble), research dissemination entities (ExtraWeb), media (Cargo Systems), various professional transport associations and the EU Commission.

This user-friendly and colourful book also includes lots of pictures and graphs.

You can download the Table of Contents and the Indrodution Here.

Perfect timing for the Handbook

Already for some years, the expectations, visions and ambitions about intermodal transport as alternative to the congested road transport have been high.

There are success stories, but there is much to achieve. Circumstances seem to be changing in favour of intermodal transport. The enlargement of the EU, the progress made in railway liberalisation, the political focus on the shortsea alternative, congestion and pricing in the road network all encourage the a review of logistics structures.

This will create new opportunities and therefore we expect that the next few years will be critical for the development of intermodal transport. With the handbook you will be equipped with a broad based understanding of intermodal transport, which by nature is complex.

Who can benefit from this handbook?

The handbook is aimed at all organisations in and around the intermodal transport industry.

It is written for all those with stake in the development of intermodal transport.

Managers and staff in the logistics industry: freight forwarders, shipping lines, logistic service providers and all types of freight transport operators.

Shippers involved in integrating intermodal transport in their supply chains.

Public organisations or public private partnerships, active in the field of logistics, organisations with stakes in the development of infrastructure, logistic parks or in intermodal business development.

Policy makers in the field of transport, logistics and regional development

Suppliers to the intermodal transport industry.

Financial institutions, which have interest in financing intermodal transport assets or infrastructure.

Consultants, research organisations and students in logistics and transport economics.

CERGAL 2010 will be directed towards Maritime and Inland Waterways applications and GNSS Testing Infrastructure.

28 April 2010, Rostock, Germany.

Qualification and certification for mission and safety critical applications are major cornerstones in the successful operational roll-out of Satellite Navigation systems like GPS/EGNOS and Galileo.
Key differentiators of systems like Galileo are e.g. certifiability of the system / signals and service guarantees for the users. These differentiators are important drivers for potential revenues and resulting business cases. The main challenge in the certification of EGNOS and Galileo is that there is no single standard against which it can be certified, as the final application certification needs to be against the standards relevant for the individual application domain. Another challenge in the successful implementation and use of EGNOS and Galileo is the lead time for certification of mission and safety critical applications. A timely success of Galileo will require a reduction in lead times for certification.

In this context CERGAL concentrates on the measures already established and future activities which will demonstrate that all provisions are implemented which assure SATNAV systems certification and operational safety. Special focus of CERGAL 2010 will be directed towards Maritime and Inland Waterways applications and GNSS Testing Infrastructure.
CERGAL has been established as cross-border information exchange and discussion platform for system and application developers, operators, approval authorities and users.
