Qualification and certification for mission and safety critical applications are major cornerstones in the successful operational roll-out of Satellite Navigation systems like GPS/EGNOS and Galileo.
Key differentiators of systems like Galileo are e.g. certifiability of the system / signals and service guarantees for the users. These differentiators are important drivers for potential revenues and resulting business cases. The main challenge in the certification of EGNOS and Galileo is that there is no single standard against which it can be certified, as the final application certification needs to be against the standards relevant for the individual application domain. Another challenge in the successful implementation and use of EGNOS and Galileo is the lead time for certification of mission and safety critical applications. A timely success of Galileo will require a reduction in lead times for certification.

In this context CERGAL concentrates on the measures already established and future activities which will demonstrate that all provisions are implemented which assure SATNAV systems certification and operational safety. Special focus of CERGAL 2010 will be directed towards Maritime and Inland Waterways applications and GNSS Testing Infrastructure.
CERGAL has been established as cross-border information exchange and discussion platform for system and application developers, operators, approval authorities and users.

15-17 November 2009

EIA is planning to send a delegation to Washington, with the aim to have a meeting with American authorities responsible for transport, as well as to visit the annual Intermodal Conference organized by our sister Association IANA.

The Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) and the National Industrial Transportation League (NITL) announce the 27th annual Intermodal Expo/TransComp Exhibition, on 15-17th November 2009, at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim. IANA and NITL are once again hosting the two main events in the freight transportation industry, bringing together carriers and shippers.

The invention of the container has brought an extraordinary high degree of rationalisation to modern freight transport. This fact can be regarded nowadays as the very basis of economical globalisation. However, the downside of this rapid growth is the environmental burden resulting in higher emissions. Since globalisation can hardly be reversed and environmental pollution is an accepted claim, there is a need to look for solutions that prevent the increase of traffic from being damaging and destructive. Intermodality holds the key to make a massive contribution to this approach. In order to achieve an improvement of efficiency in a sustainable way, the intermodal freight traffic needs a regulatory framework, which is as consistent as possible.

The EIA is strongly cooperating with other intermodal bodies around the globe in order to provide the necessary measures and assistance to policy makers. In fact, this will be the main goal of the first global intermodal conference 2010.

. The basic requirements for intermodal connections are adequate intermodal terminals where units transact between modes. Therefore, the topic of the meeting scheduled November 2010 in Florida is:

Making the Intermodal Connection – The Role of Terminals

In order to focus efforts, it is proposed that the conference will concentrate on surface freight interchanges: water, rail thand truck. This preparatory meeting will take place during the 27th Intermodal Expo/TransComp Exhibition.

- Turning the green policy agenda into innovative business opportunities

Alongside the conference sessions, leading suppliers from the road, rail and maritime sectors will be showcasing their latest innovations at the Intermodal Europe 2010 Exhibition. Dedicated to all modes of transport, the exhibition is the perfect place to source equipment, systems, technology and services.

Logitrans Transports Logistics Fair

4 -6 November 2010

Intending to revive losses and create new communications, Eko Fair Company organizes the 4th Logitrans Transport Logistic Fair that brings manufacturers, sellers and service providers from leading Turkish and European transport, logistics and commercial vehicles industries at one place.

Playing even greater role in the Global Economics every passing year, Turkey moves non-stop forward by successfully handling its foreign trade activities. Income of over 240 billion US dollars from exports and imports in 2009, likewise gave way to strengthen business framework towards a global market in 2010. However, the past and recent economic crisis on the globe almost ruined the business of even strongest players all over the world.

Taking into consideration that more than 125 billion US dollars value of import and some 92 billion US dollars value of export transports were operated from/ to Turkey in 2009, it is clear that Turkish transport and logistics market continues to grow rapidly. With this picture the importance of alliances and partnerships at national and international platform become more critical. Fairs are the most appropriate and accurate platforms for beginning cooperation and partnerships.

125 years UITP

19 September 2010

Brussels, Belgium

UITP believes that public transport in a broader sense is the sustainable mobility solution for the future. This conviction stems from its long history as the centre of expertise and the promoter of the sector worldwide. Today’s forward-looking solutions are the result of past ideas and historical developments. This is especially true for the public transport sector which has adapted itself and remained relevant throughout the changes in the society.

In order to honour the 125 years’ anniversary of UITP, a series of initiatives are foreseen, including an academic session with high-level political speakers, a parade of old trams and buses in the heart of the city, followed by a reception in an exceptional venue. This event will take place within the framework of the Belgian EU Presidency and the European Mobility Week.

20 – 22 September 2010

Hamburg, Germany

Major retailers are taking an increasingly proactive approach to sustainable procurement, including carbon footprint and waste reduction, plus ethical sourcing policies. While current initiatives are largely voluntary and market-driven, more stringent policy regimes may also loom on the horizon at both national and international level. Speakers at Cool Logistics 2010 will explore the impact of these concerns on perishable logistics and transport, including maritime, air and landside distribution, at a time of continued pressure to take operational costs out of cold supply chains. More than ever, efficiency appears to be the mantra – but what does this really mean in practice and can common efficiency solutions be found to address sustainability and cost concerns?
The conference will also review the extent to which predicted transport capacity constraints – particularly for reefer containers – are impacting perishable supply chain planning and execution, and how to respond in the short and longer term.

5 – 7 October 2010

St. Petersburg, Russia

Russian ports have continuously been the key factor for the economic and foreign trade development of the country during the last 20 years. The Russian ports form the basic element which connects sea, inland waterways transportation, short-se shipping and which influences directly the railway, road and air transportation of Russia.
In accordance with the opinion expressed by the Secretary General of IAPH during his participation jointly with ASOP at the last “TRANSTEC 2008” Exhibition, it is evident that Russia’s economy is obviously strong for the future although it may have a number of problems to overcome like any other country. It was pointed out that Russia cannot grow and develop by itself in the future but, on the basis of its great geographical advantages, Russia has good opportunities.

Awards for which areas?

To be able to compare different applications, it’s necessary to discriminate some areas of activities. Best intermodal transport or freight integration service from A to B Best intermodal transport or logistic product (examples: special wagons, trailors, handling equipment, IT-software etc.) Best integration of intermodalism into a shipper’s logistic chain.

What to win?

First of all, the winners can win an elegant, bronze Award (Trophy) which symbolises all transport modes in an integrated manner, which will be handed-over by the President of EIA (Mrs. Hanja Maij Weggen), the Secretary General of EIA, Mr. K. Ebeling and/or a representative of the EU Commission.

During a cocktail party, the winners can present their ‘best’ intermodal solution in front of a large high-level audience. The winning files will be considered as ‘best practical examples’ for the EU authorities from one side, the ‘market’ from the other side and EIA as neutral ‘bridging platform’ in between.

Interviews are foreseen, information concerning the short-listed companies on our website will be published, large-volume email newsflashes to all the relevant EU institutions, transport companies will be disseminated a few months up to the event, during the handing-over ceremony itself and even after the ceremony.

Moreover, a number of Transport Magazines are invited to write articles about the winning intermodal products / services.

Independent Jury:

The annual Intermodal Awards event is officially supported by both the European Commission, European Parliament who accepted a seat in the independent Jury. Other Jury members who are invited to accept a seat are representatives of various transport sectors like rail, road, waterborne, forwarders and shippers (manufacturers).

Procedure:

Template Application form Intermodal Award

Three key judging criteria: the product or service should be in an intermodal environment, in actual commercial operation and innovative in approach. Please note that by mentioning the measurable contribution of your company to the environment, your chances to win will increase.

Research projects, feasibility studies, etc. are not accepted in this competition, since it is our aim to focus on concrete and existing market realisations, no ‘paper’ solutions. Intermodal is making it work in reality, not producing theoretical formulas.

Structure of your file:

Description of the product

Operational relevant facts & figures

Intermodal aspects

Innovative aspect

Key strategic elements which turned your product into a market success. The applications of those who follow the required structure are more likely to succeed.

After receipt of all applications, a shortlist will be prepared of candidates who met the minimum selection criteria & structure; this will be the basis of discussion for the independent Jury.

Format in which the files should be transmitted:

A file in Word or ‘html‘ format to be integrated either on the website of EIA or via a hyperlink towards the website of the candidate. This approach has been chosen to be as transparent as possible. (be to the point; +/- 10-15 pages including pictures)

In case of confidential facts & figures, the candidate may choose to send a confidential ‘version’ of the same file to the Jury.

Surf regularly on the website of EIA to be informed about any updates concerning deadlines / procedures, or contact EIA.

Sponsorship possibilities:

If you are interested in taking part in the Award ceremony, but not as candidate for the Award itself, we can offer you several sponsorship possibilities.
Do profile your company at EU. level, while benefiting from the attention this event will receive before the event, during the hand-over ceremony itself, and even after the ceremony.
Please contact EIA to evoke what you will get in return for your sponsor commitment.
Options e.g: a presentation of your company before the hand-over of the Awards, the integration of your company’s logo on all official invitations, Power Point presentation, press releases, contact with press etc.
