Rome, Telespazio, 11 February 2010: 13 companies from Italy, France, Austria and Belgium kicked-off the European Research & Development project SCUTUM, SeCUring the EU GNSS adopTion in the dangeroUs Material transport.

SCUTUM’s goal is to support an EU-wide use of EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service) in the transport management of hazardous goods.

In the coming 21 months, the project will implement a best practice approach. The experience of ENI, a leading Italian oil company, operating at international level, presently using EGNOS Open Service to monitor its fleet for the transport of hydrocarbon in Italy, will be extended to two neighbouring countries, France and Austria. In parallel, SCUTUM will enhance the ENI monitoring system by making use of the EGNOS Commercial Service during a large-scale trial involving 100 vehicles in Italy, France and Austria. The authorities involved in the trials (the Italian and French Ministries of Transport) will evaluate the demonstration’s results, and validate the benefits and value of EGNOS-based accurate and guaranteed tracking & tracing services for enhancing safety.

As a successor of the MENTORE project (www.gnsstracking.eu), SCUTUM intends to implement the actions identified in MENTORE by:

Extending EGNOS national best practices on cross-border basis, as a first step towards a wider adoption in Europe and in the freight transport market

Operating large scale trials to support standardisation and harmonisation at European level.

SCUTUM will be present at the Galileo Application Days in Brussels from 3 to 5 March 2010. For more information about the project, visit us in Brussels and at www.scutumgnss.eu.

Special offer for the handbook Intermodal Transport in Europe.

The Handbook Intermodal Transport in Europe is now available for only 49€!

Why the first handbook on European intermodal freight transport?

Much has been said and reported about intermodal transport in Europe, but you will probably not find a comprehensive summary explaining “Intermodalism from A to Z” in a compact form, combined with concrete business fact sheets and written in English.

This first handbook, including a foreword by Jacques Barrot, Vice President of the European Commission responsible for Transport, fills this gap and can be ordered now.

It gives major insights into all aspects of Intermodal transport, from production and technology to quality, markets and policy issues. This new reference point for the intermodal industry includes contributions from China Turkey and the USA.

Apart from the main explanatory text, about 50 additional fact sheets of successful intermodal players will give an insight regarding their strategy, experiences, services and products.

Sponsors and contributors of fact sheets: AAE, Ambrogio, Amrie, Polzug Intermodal GmbH, Port of Rotterdam, Rail Cargo Austria, ÖBB, Port of Taranto, OOCL and Via Donau and many others stemming from all transport modes, like HUPAC, KALMAR, STINNES, manufacturing industries (NIKE, Procter & Gamble), research dissemination entities (ExtraWeb), media (Cargo Systems), various professional transport associations and the EU Commission.

This user-friendly and colourful book also includes lots of pictures and graphs.

You can download the Table of Contents and the Indrodution Here.

Perfect timing for the Handbook

Already for some years, the expectations, visions and ambitions about intermodal transport as alternative to the congested road transport have been high.

There are success stories, but there is much to achieve. Circumstances seem to be changing in favour of intermodal transport. The enlargement of the EU, the progress made in railway liberalisation, the political focus on the shortsea alternative, congestion and pricing in the road network all encourage the a review of logistics structures.

This will create new opportunities and therefore we expect that the next few years will be critical for the development of intermodal transport. With the handbook you will be equipped with a broad based understanding of intermodal transport, which by nature is complex.

Who can benefit from this handbook?

The handbook is aimed at all organisations in and around the intermodal transport industry.

It is written for all those with stake in the development of intermodal transport.

Managers and staff in the logistics industry: freight forwarders, shipping lines, logistic service providers and all types of freight transport operators.

Shippers involved in integrating intermodal transport in their supply chains.

Public organisations or public private partnerships, active in the field of logistics, organisations with stakes in the development of infrastructure, logistic parks or in intermodal business development.

Policy makers in the field of transport, logistics and regional development

Suppliers to the intermodal transport industry.

Financial institutions, which have interest in financing intermodal transport assets or infrastructure.

Consultants, research organisations and students in logistics and transport economics.

The 5th International Ports and the Environment Conference and exhibition GreenPort 2010 will take place in Stockholm on 24-25 February 2010, in association with EcoPorts and ESPO.

Delegates will be gathering in Stockholm to discuss key port environmental issues such as: Climate Change, Port Authorities’ green initiatives, Biodiversity and Natura 2000, the Port-City Relationship, Port Technology and Renewable Energy. One of the highlights of the programme will be the announcement of the results of the ESPO / EcoPorts Port Environmental Review 2009. The outcome of the review will form the basis for updating the ESPO Environmental Code of Practice and will provide the framework for adapting EcoPorts tools and for undertaking new research, development and application initiatives.
